Known Patterns
What we see most on a Ford
Ford is a broad range, so the answer depends heavily on which engine you have. These four cover most of it.
Rough running or a misfire on an EcoBoost
Direct injection carbon on the intake valves, plus coil and plug wear. These engines are strong but they want their ignition parts on schedule rather than when they finally fail.
Coolant loss on a 1.5 or 1.6 EcoBoost
Coolant intrusion into a cylinder is a documented issue on these engines. It presents as coolant disappearing with no external leak, and it needs identifying properly rather than being written off as a mystery.
A misfire on a 5.4 Triton after a plug change
These engines are notorious for spark plugs seizing or breaking off in the head. It needs the right technique and the right extraction tools. This is not a job to hand to somebody who has not done it.
Shuddering or hesitation on a DPS6 dual clutch
Fitted to the Focus and Fiesta, and a known source of complaints. Worth diagnosing properly, because the correct repair depends on which part of the system is at fault and some of it has been covered by extended programs.
Worth knowing
A Ford ten speed is not finished until it relearns
The 10R80 in F-150s and Mustangs adapts its shift pressures to the transmission it is bolted to, and those learned values live in the module. Replace or repair something and leave the old adaptations in place and the customer gets harsh or flaring shifts on a transmission that is mechanically fine. Resetting and relearning the adapts is part of the repair here, not an add-on at the end.
The Range
The F-150 is half of it, and the rest shares almost nothing with it
Ford is the broadest book we keep. Roughly half of what arrives wearing the badge is an F-150, and most of that is predictable: cam phasers, a timing chain guide, the occasional turbo actuator on an EcoBoost. The other half is Escapes, Explorers and Fusions, which have their own fault list and share very little with the truck beyond an oval on the grille.
That spread is why we ask which engine before quoting anything. A 5.0 and a 2.7 EcoBoost are both just an F-150 to the person driving it and two quite different jobs to us. It matters most on the ten speed automatic, where an adaptive relearn is part of finishing the repair properly rather than an optional extra at the end.
