Known Patterns

What a Nissan needs watching for

The first item is the one that decides most of these cars' futures.

Shuddering, whining or hesitation from the transmission

The CVT. This is the defining Nissan issue and it deserves a frank conversation. Some are recoverable with correct fluid service. Some are not, and we will say which yours looks like rather than taking your money either way.

A rattle on startup on a 3.5 V6

Timing chain and guide wear on the VQ engines. It develops slowly and is far cheaper addressed early, as with any chain.

Oil consumption on certain four cylinders

A known pattern on some engines. Measured over a documented interval rather than assumed, so you have a number to decide with.

Clunks from the front and uneven tire wear

Struts, bushings and links wear on a predictable schedule and Michigan roads accelerate it. Alignment belongs with the repair, not after it.

The CVT Question

We will give you a straight answer on the transmission

Most people arriving with a Nissan already know what they want to ask about. The continuously variable transmissions in the Rogue, Altima and Sentra have a reputation, and some of it is deserved. They are sensitive to fluid condition and to heat, and they do not tolerate neglect the way a conventional automatic sometimes will. Shuddering, a whine that rises with speed, and hesitation when pulling away are all worth investigating early.

What we will not do is guess. A CVT gets its fluid condition checked, its adaptation data read and a road test under load before anyone talks about replacement, because some of what gets blamed on the transmission is a failing engine mount or a torque converter that has never been looked at. When it genuinely is the transmission, we will tell you plainly and price it honestly.

Worth knowing

A CVT is not an automatic and does not take its fluid

Nissan's continuously variable transmissions run a steel belt across a pair of variable pulleys, and the fluid is engineered to grip rather than to slip the way conventional automatic fluid does. Conventional fluid in a CVT is not a compromise, it is a short road to a replacement. A whine or a shudder on one of these gets a fluid condition assessment before anything else.

Questions

Nissan questions

Is my Nissan CVT going to fail?
Not necessarily, and it is worth a real diagnosis rather than a reputation. Some are recoverable with correct fluid service, some are past that. We will tell you which yours looks like, including when the answer is that it is not worth repairing.
Should I service the CVT fluid?
Yes, with the correct specification fluid and on a sensible interval. Extended intervals are what put many of these units in trouble in the first place. It is cheap insurance on a costly component.
How much is a CVT replacement?
Enough that on an older Nissan it frequently exceeds what the car is worth, which is a conversation we would rather have before you spend money on diagnosis than after.
Is a used Nissan a bad buy?
Not at all, but have the transmission assessed before you commit. That single check is the difference between a sensible purchase and an expensive one. We are happy to look one over.
