Toyota Bones, More To Go Wrong

Reliable underneath, complicated on top

A Lexus is built on Toyota engineering, which is why they reach the mileages they do, and then has a great deal of additional equipment layered on. The engines and transmissions are durable and well understood. Air suspension on some models, the adaptive dampers, the multimedia and the driver assistance systems are where the newer faults live, and they need proper diagnosis rather than parts swapping.

The mechanical side, in other words, we treat as Toyota work: inspect it, service it, and it will keep going. The electronics get factory level scan capability, because a fault in one of these systems frequently reports somewhere other than where it is, and the expensive mistake is replacing the module the code mentions.

Known Patterns

What a Lexus needs watching for

A short list, because these cars genuinely do not go wrong often.

Oil weeping from the cam towers or valve covers

A known seepage point on several V6 and V8 engines as they age. It is a seal rather than anything structural, but it belongs on the list before it reaches the belt.

Water pump seepage on the V6

Shared with Toyota, and it weeps before it fails. Caught on an inspection this is straightforward and much cheaper than an overheat.

The ride going harsh or a suspension warning

Air suspension on some of the larger models. As always, the leaking component should be found before the compressor is condemned.

Fluids that never get mentioned

Transmission, differential and brake fluid. On cars this durable these are what decide whether high mileage is comfortable or expensive.

Questions

Lexus questions

Is a Lexus expensive to maintain?
Not really, once you are outside the dealer network. The mechanicals are largely Toyota, so parts are sensible. The difference in what people pay is mostly the hourly rate.
Can you do dealer level work on a Lexus?
Yes. Factory level scan capability, calibrations and adaptations all happen here rather than being referred on.
My Lexus has a small oil leak. Is it urgent?
Not usually, but do not leave it indefinitely. Cam tower and valve cover seepage is common with age, and left long enough the oil reaches belts and mounts.
How long will a Lexus last?
A long time with ordinary maintenance. As with Toyota, the cars that do best are the ones whose transmission and differential fluids were actually serviced rather than assumed lifetime.

Worth knowing

Two sets of injectors is why the valves stay clean

Carbon building up on the back of the intake valves is the classic direct injection problem: with no fuel washing over them, deposits have nothing to remove them. Many Lexus engines use port injectors as well as direct ones, and the port spray keeps the valves clean as a side effect. It is one of the quieter reasons these engines age as well as they do.
