The Short Drive

A few minutes east of Coolidge

Berkley sits just west of Woodward, and we sit on it. From 12 Mile and Coolidge it is a short run east and then a turn, and from the residential streets north of Catalpa it is barely further. For most of Berkley we are the closest full service repair shop that is not a quick lube or a tire chain.

The short drive is not a throwaway detail, it changes how you can use a shop. You can drop a car before work and collect it after. You can bring something in because it is making a noise rather than waiting until it is making a bigger one. Small problems get looked at while they are still small, which is where almost all of the savings in car ownership actually live.

It also means we see a lot of low mileage, short trip cars from Berkley, and those have their own wear pattern. An engine that never reaches full operating temperature leaves fuel and moisture in the oil, batteries never fully recharge, and brake rotors surface rust between uses. None of that is a fault, but it does mean the service interval printed in the book is optimistic for how these cars are actually driven.

Short Trips, Real Wear

What a car that never leaves town needs watching for

Low mileage is not the same as low wear. These are the five things that catch out short trip cars, and none of them show up on a mileage based schedule.

  1. Oil that is old rather than worn out

Time degrades oil as surely as miles do, and short trips leave fuel and moisture in it. If a car is under the mileage but past the months, it is still due.

  2. A battery that never fully recharges

Ten minute drives do not replace what starting takes out. Berkley cars fail batteries early and they nearly always fail on the first cold morning, not gradually.

  3. Brake rotors that rust between drives

A car that sits through a wet week develops surface rust that gets scraped off on the next drive. Repeat that all winter and the rotor loses thickness without ever having done many miles.

  4. Exhaust that rots from the inside

Short runs never boil the condensation out of the exhaust system, so it corrodes from inside out. This is why a low mileage car can need a muffler before a high mileage one does.

  5. Tires that age out before they wear out

Rubber hardens with time whether or not the tread goes. Plenty of cars here have plenty of tread on tires that are no longer safe, and the date code on the sidewall is the thing to read.

Questions

Berkley questions

How far are you from Berkley?
A few minutes. We are at 29444 Woodward Ave in Royal Oak, so from 12 Mile and Coolidge it is a short run east to Woodward. For most of Berkley we are the nearest full service shop.
Can I drop the car off the night before?
Yes. There is 24 hour drop off, which is how most people here use us. The car is on a lift first thing rather than whenever you can get away from work.
My car barely does any miles. Do I still need servicing?
Yes, and often on a tighter schedule than the mileage suggests. Short trips are harder on oil, batteries, exhaust and brakes than highway miles are. Time based intervals matter as much as distance.
Do you do quick jobs like an oil change without an appointment?
Yes. Walk in for an oil change and you get a free multi-point inspection with it. Booking just means you are not waiting behind anyone.
Is a written estimate free?
Yes. You get the number before anything is touched, and nothing proceeds until you approve it.
What if the repair is bigger than expected?
You get a call, and a decision. We do not carry on and explain it afterwards.
Do you warranty the work?
Most repairs carry our limited lifetime warranty for as long as you own the vehicle. The full terms are written down and we will hand you a copy.
