Volkswagen Service
Volkswagen Repair in Royal Oak, MI
Volkswagens are straightforward cars with a handful of very specific weak points. Know the list and they run a long time. Ignore it and you meet all of them at once.
- Walnut blasting for TSI carbon buildup
- DSG fluid and clutch adaptation service
- Factory level scan capability in house
- Limited lifetime warranty on most repairs
Known Patterns
The Volkswagen short list
Most VW repair work in this shop comes down to these. If your car is doing one of them, it is behaving exactly like every other example of the platform.
Coolant loss with no puddle underneath
The plastic water pump and thermostat housing assembly is the usual answer, and it often weeps into the undertray rather than onto the driveway. It is a known service life rather than bad luck.
Hesitation and rough running as miles build
Direct injection carbon on the intake valves. It arrives gradually, so most owners adapt to it without noticing until it is cleaned off. Walnut blasting is the proper fix.
A brief rattle when you first start it
Timing chain tensioner on the earlier TSI engines. This is the one to act on quickly. The part is not expensive and the consequence of a jumped chain is.
Oil in the intake or a whistling from the engine
The PCV diaphragm splits, which throws odd fuel trim codes and can pull oil where it should not go. Easy to test, easy to replace, frequently misdiagnosed as something larger.
A misfire that moves between cylinders
Coil packs. They fail one at a time and the fault follows the coil rather than the cylinder, which is how we confirm it before selling you a set.
Jerky low speed shifting on a DSG
The dual clutch box needs its fluid and filter at interval, plus clutch adaptation afterwards. Kept up, these are durable. Neglected, the mechatronic unit becomes the conversation.
Worth knowing
The water pump is often a timing job
On a number of Volkswagen four cylinders the water pump is plastic bodied and driven from inside the timing cover rather than off the accessory belt on the front of the engine. That means a coolant leak which sounds like a small job is actually a strip down to the timing drive, and it also means it is sensible to do the thermostat and anything else in there at the same time. We will tell you which kind yours is before you commit.
Doing It Properly
What a VW needs that a generic service misses
Volkswagen shares most of its engineering with Audi, which means it also shares the requirement for manufacturer level data. Service position, basic settings, throttle adaptation, DSG clutch adaptation and battery registration are all part of doing the job rather than optional refinements.
The practical result is that a VW serviced properly at an independent shop behaves like the dealer serviced it, and a VW serviced by somebody working from a generic database often comes back running worse than it went in.
On cost, Volkswagen is one of the makes where the aftermarket genuinely matches original equipment on many parts, because the same suppliers sell into both. We take advantage of that where it is true and say so where it is not.
