Land Rover Repair in Royal Oak, MI

Land Rovers have a reputation, and it is not entirely undeserved. What is true is that almost everything on the list is known, documented and far cheaper handled early than after it has cascaded.

  • Air suspension diagnosed properly
  • Electrical faults traced, not guessed
  • Dealer level tooling, independent rate
  • Limited lifetime warranty on most repairs

Known Patterns

What a Land Rover needs watching for

Four items account for most of what arrives here, and the first one is the signature.

The vehicle sits low or throws a suspension fault

Air suspension. Air springs leak as they age, the compressor then runs itself to death keeping up, and the valve block gets blamed. Finding the leak first is what keeps this affordable.

Coolant loss or running warm

Plastic cooling components and water pumps are a known age item, and these engines do not forgive overheating. Worth replacing as a system at the right mileage.

Oil leaks from several places

Common with age, and worth identifying properly because some are trivial and some mean the timing cover comes off. Those are not the same conversation.

Electrical faults that appear together

Lots of modules and real sensitivity to voltage. A tired battery or a poor ground produces a screen of unrelated warnings that looks like catastrophe and is not.

Worth knowing

A car that sits low overnight has an air leak

Range Rovers and Discoverys on air suspension should be at the same height in the morning as they were when they were parked. One corner down, or the whole car settled, means an air spring, a line or a valve block is leaking, and the compressor has been working overtime to hide it. Fixing the leak first is what stops this becoming a compressor job as well.

Known For A Reason

Two systems account for most of the bills

Land Rovers have a reputation and it is not entirely unfair, but it is more specific than the reputation suggests. Two systems account for most of what comes through the door: air suspension and electrics. Compressors, air bags and height sensors on the first, and on the second a long list of symptoms that turn out to be grounds, connectors and a tired battery far more often than they turn out to be a failed module.

Which is why testing comes before parts on these more than on almost anything else we work on. A Range Rover that has been guessed at by two previous shops is a common story, and it is usually expensive by the time it arrives. Diagnosed properly, they are perfectly maintainable vehicles, and we will be honest about which repairs are worth the money on an older one.

Questions

Land Rover questions

Are Land Rovers as unreliable as people say?
They need more attention than average and they punish deferral hard. Handled on schedule they are far less dramatic than the reputation. Most horror stories are a small fault that was left until it took other things with it.
Can you fix air suspension?
Yes, and properly, which means identifying the leaking component rather than replacing the compressor. Compressors normally fail because a spring was leaking, so replacing only the compressor buys you months.
Is it cheaper than the dealer?
Materially, on any job of size. Same diagnostic capability, different hourly rate. We will also tell you which items on a dealer estimate we would not do yet.
Should I buy a used Range Rover?
Have it inspected first, without exception. The difference between a well kept example and a deferred one is enormous, and it is not visible from the driver's seat.
